I have had multiple experiences with CAOR; some of them ended negatively and others ended with a published article. Although I had to work with a different associate editor each time, I always had the impression that AEs are very closely involved with the process and reviews. There had been some unjustified criticism or some slightly irrational major issues in the reviews but the reviewers were always selected from the appropriate field of expertise/specialty. The reviews are usually timely, or at the very least I would get immediate response when I requested information about the status of my submissions. I also served as a reviewer several times; I never received a submission that’s out of my field of expertise. Yet, the timeliness of the AEs varied significantly; some of them were very strict in deadlines while some others would not care that much.
